To love is to be vulnerable

To love is to allow oneself to be vulnerable
To love is to allow oneself to be affected by what the beloved does
To love is to allow the beloved to have power over your emotions
Love is not just about sharing happiness
It is also about learning to accept the pain that comes as the price for love

I told a son
Do not stop your mother when she starts talking about the good old days when you were little, when you were still with her, when you were still at home…
Do not stop your mother when she tells you that she will look at your photos over and over again when you are far from home…
Yes, all these talks about reminiscing the good old days before you grew up and left home make you sad… and you don’t like to be sad…

But still, let her speak, don’t stop her…
Those were the memories that meant so much to her…
Let her keep them, let her talk about them
Don’t ask her to stop…
Reminiscing is her right, don’t rob her of that right…
What is life without reminiscing…

If you love her,
let her reminisce, even if it makes you sad
